A/N: Freddy and his Sreaming Horn of Love is fast becoming his own series. Our flatlipped friend makes a return in this, the Fourth installment. Though this piece fits nicely into my Jungle series it could seriously be considered an episode all on its own. Jealous, drunken smut abounds. Smut. Don’t you just love saying that word? Smut…Smut…Smut…has such a nice ring to it. Oh, right, the story. Okay. I’ll stop talking now. Go on. You can read it. Not another word from me. Nope. Notta. None. Zip. Zilch even. Okay. I’m done. Seriously. Finsihed. Okay then.

I'm working on a short story set in the Shifters world right now, and can I just say what an incredible relief it is to be working in that world, for what will likely be the last time? As much as I love Kaylee and the Soul Screamers world, and as much fun as I have there, writing about my werecats feels like going home. I feel like I know where I am in that world, whereas in Kaylee's world, I'm still feeling my way around. (Which is awesome too, in its own way--lots of surprises.)
But anyway, working on this short story has made me think about one of the most valuable things I've learned since I started writing. It's pretty simple, and I sometimes feel like an idiot for not figuring it out earlier than I did. But here goes:
The reader doesn't need to know what happened every moment of my character’s day. Not even in summary. It’s really completely okay to end one scene where it should logically end, then start the next one when the next action begins, so long as I give a reference to location and how much time has passed. Readers don’t need to know what happened in between. If the in-between were relevant, it wouldn’t be the in-between. It’d be another scene.
Hey, that almost rhymes!
So, that's my little bit of wisdom for today. ;-)
I just want to know who's gonna go down and check for space monsters because you know Space Monsters are totally going to have set up camp in a Moon Hole. Also...does Moon Hole sound like some sort of swear word to you?

So yesterday when briefly talking about Avatar, I said: "And I thought about Polish cavalry charging German tanks and how people repeating history isn't so much heartbreaking as it is a stupid result of bad strategy. I expect that wasn't exactly what they wanted me to think about."
And
jeza_red said: "I'm always curious about that "Polish Cavalry" thing... funny stereotype, almost as funny as "history" classes some people have attended."
And I thought: "Wait? What? That didn't happen?" So I looked it up. And found that the Polish Cavalry actually charged infantry at Krojanty, took machine gun fire, many casualties, and had to retreat; although they'd delayed the German advance and the mission was considered a success. The tanks came from a reporter's misinterpretation of the bodies on the battlefield after the Battle of Tuchola Forest and the charge that never happened became myth. A myth of tragic bravery against overwhelming odds but still, myth.
So I apologised to
jeza_red because I imagine that, being Polish, she's a little tired of her country's history being misrepresented world wide. Also, she definitely has a point about the history classes I took.
Although it's been so long things are definitely blurry, I suspect not much, if any at all, of the scant WWII history I had touched on anything but the Canadian involvement. A little Dieppe, a little Vimy Ridge, a mention of Hong Kong and otherwise, nada. And lest you think all the Canadian bases were covered, I lived in a town where there was a POW camp during WWI and II and would never have known it had my grandfather not been stationed there during WWII. It was never mentioned in the nine years I went to school less than ten kilometers away from it.
Anyway, this whole thing made me wonder how much "popular knowledge" of history is less than factual. A proportion we'll never realize if the people who know the facts don't sigh deeply and jump in. Thanks to
jeza_red , I found out something I didn't know.
Now you know it too.
PAIRINGS: Sara/Grissom
RATING: Mature/Adult
STATUS: WIP
SUMMARY: Grissom knew Sara was beautiful, but when she entered the room with the others, wearing stilettos and a red dress, he couldn’t ignore his attraction to his subordinate any longer. The way she danced and laughed with her co-workers made him want to have her completely to himself and never let her go. This will eventually go on through the series, bringing in things they revealed on the show, and coming up with the personal side that they "should" have shown. This will soon turn into a rating of M, so I listed the first few chapters in that category in preparation for the rest.

Hello Friends,Bold emphasis is mine.
I wanted to send out a quick reminder that the Laurell K. Hamilton Forum will soon be upgrading the version of vBulletin that we use to vBulletin 4.0. This will mean a few things for you and I wanted to make sure that everyone was aware of them. The first is that the Forum will probably be inaccessible for a few days, but we will be back soon and you will have lots of new things to play with and explore. This brings me to the next thing that may impact you; when we come back it will be to a completely new forum and we anticipate that we will not be bringing any of the posts from the old forum with us. So it's HIGHLY advisable that if you have any posts that are valuable to you and you don't want to lose, that you come back NOW and save them. I know that most of you put a lot of time and effort into your posts and we want you to be able to post that information again on the few forum. The other thing that is very possible, is that we may NOT be bringing user names to the new forum with us. This means that when we are back up and running, you will have to re-register your user name. These things are not set in stone, but they are very possible so I wanted to make everyone aware of what could be happening so that you know what actions you might need to take upon your return.
I don't know if it's a lack of tech savvy skills in being able to preserve things during the upgrade, or just a chance to wipe the slate clean (personally, I think it's the latter), but the point is: if you want anything from the forums, now is the time to copy/screencap. If there's anything in particular that you'd like us to save for posterity on the Lashouts site, let us know. At the very least, I'm going to be saving the long list of rules about not calling Anita a Mary Sue/whore etc, just in case things get changed in the overhaul.

I've posted a 3.53 so far, with one incomplete still to go. Considering it is my first semester of grad school, plus everything else that happened, I am satisfied with this performance. That being said, I expect to do better in the spring, since I'll be taking classes I want to take rather than ones I must take. I intentionally took both of the classes I had to take as part of my program in order to get them out of the way. I knew they didn't interest me much, but the sooner I got them done, the better. For the rest of my time in the program, I can take more or less whatever I want, so long as I continue to make satisfactory progress. Not a bad way to be.

I listed 15 books this afternoon. Some of them are old and out-of-date texts, others much more recent. Five of them have already sold. So now I have an errand to run tomorrow. :-)
Look everyone! A post! A short one, but a post nonetheless! And it wasn't a wrap-up of anything, or a meme, or a fun video! Just an everyday piece of life kinda post! This resolution thing really works! :-)

If you find yourself at the crossroads of insomnia and insanity, this is the place to channel those demons that keep you sleepless. Vivid pictures, poetry, ruminations, and confessions from the nether hours between dusk and dawn. Originally formed to celebrate the city at night, there's a strong urban theme.
Dedicated to promoting global sustainability, this community offers a forum for discussing current environmental news, research, and issues with tips on how to make positive, pro-active changes to reduce carbon impact. You'll also find information on how to get involved in eco-activism and learn about events near you (i.e., act local; think global). Offering a wealth of data on earth-friendly products and practices, you'll be inspired to don an organic bamboo cape and save the planet.
Self-described as "a little community with a lot of rage," you can soak up impassioned vibes and read blistering exposes detailing sexist attitudes in the news, pop culture, and science! A must-join community if you are, or love, a feminist. (NB: the topic of whether a "man" can be a feminist is outside the scope of this spotlight, but will probably wind up on the Writer's Block.)
Today, I'm guest blogging at the Harlequin Paranormal Romance blog, with some Soul Screamer secrets. Including a question at the end of the post. If someone guesses the answer, I'll tell the story. Have you read My Soul to Save? If so, go give it a shot!
If not, you might not want to read the comments. Not sure, but there may be spoilers. ;-)
1. Sherlock Holmes
This movie has no socially redeeming value. But it does have Robert Downy Jr. and Jude Law and, more importantly because I love both Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Guy Ritchie. Loved it lots. Will definitely buy the DVD.
2. Avatar
Not exactly deep but damned pretty and, frankly, I don't much appreciate deep in my movies. I'm all about the escape. And lo, there was escape. Also Sam Worthington. And Sigourny Weaver. Disney should take note - if they'd colored Pocahontas blue and added a tail and given me 3D glasses, recent evidence suggests I'd have been much more interested in sticking it out until the end.
I cried when they wanted me to. I laughed when they wanted me to. I was enthralled when they wanted me to be. And I thought about Polish cavalry charging German tanks (eta: which is myth and they actually and successfully charged infantry; my bad) and how people repeating history (eta: or, as it happens, myth) isn't so much heartbreaking as it is a stupid result of bad strategy. I expect that wasn't exactly what they wanted me to think about.
It was an amazing experience and Cameron has pretty much proven that there's a way to put nearly anything up on screen. Go him.

Summary: Sara’s first trip back to visit Grissom in Paris proves eventful and extraordinary more for its ordinariness than anything else. And she wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Author's Note: Takes place between episodes 10x02 “Ghost Town” and 10x04 “Coup de Grace,” circa October 2009.

For reference: 2009 Resolutions.
Success:
I graduated from UMass and got into grad school. Not without some drama, but I did it.
Finally made it to the CTRF! :-)
I presented at Wicked last year, which I'm going to count as completing the "new presentation" resolution.
I'm still on staff for Programming at Arisia. That was an easy one.
Went to Arisia, Lunacon, Wicked Faire and Pi-con. Even without TBC, I achieved that one.
Definitely helped Aimee to achieve her business related goals this year.
I also think I was the best partner and housemate I could be. I hope they agree with me. :-)
Partial Success:
Unpacking all of our boxes from the 2008 move didn't happen because we moved again in 2009. Only upstairs, but still. And a great deal of progress has been made unpacking and organizing, but we've got work still to do. So that's a partial in my book.
Only visited five new county highpoints. 50% scores as a partial. Less would have been a failure.
Aimee is closer to my total number of geocaching finds, but we could have done better. And I also found a few without her. So that's a partial.
I now drink a lot more coffee than I used to. But only partially.
I think I was supportive of Vicki while she had her volunteer job. So we'll call it a partial.
Does grad school count as a creative outlet? Kinda, so a partial!
We all rejoined WW, but only last month, so supporting my partners in their WW goals scores a partial to my mind.
Failure:
I didn't climb even one 4k peak. We did one just a hair under 4k, and with the lookout tower we got over, but technicalities don't count. And even if it did, one is not two. At best, a partial. But not really.
Didn't make it to a new state highpoint, or an overnight backpacking trip.
Didn't finish the highpoints of MA. Three left...
My BMI flirted with 25, but I never got under it.
Not even close to clearing out all the geocaches in a 10 mile radius from home.
Made no substantial progress on either my financial issues or the name change.
Thoughts and musings:
This has been another eventful year. I can honestly say it has been one of the most difficult of my entire life. In no particular order:
Grad school turned out to be a lot harder than I expected. Lessons learned, but at a price.
We moved for the second time in two years, and for me it was the third. Again, it was only up a floor, but moving is never easy.
A lot of my stress was based on waiting for things to happen. Acceptance to grad school, trying to get an assistantship, that sort of thing. I never knew that being patient could be so difficult and stressful. I'm a patient person in general, but I had a hard time with it nonetheless.
My father became very ill and eventually passed away.
My own health hasn't been the best either. I think I had hamthrax this past spring, which knocked me on my ass for two weeks. My foot injury (plantar facsitis) had a large negative impact as well. I might not have been able to hike even if I'd had the time.
UMass screwed me hard last spring. I'm still burned out from all the effort and stress of trying desperately to graduate this past summer. I did it, but it cost me dearly.
TBC and WMPE ate a lot of my spoons. Some of it good, some not so much.
Since June, I've felt like there was always something I had to be doing instead of the things I wanted to be doing. Admittedly, some of the thing I had to do were by my own choices, but my batteries feel very low because I did not get enough recharge time doing the things I wanted to do. Does that make sense to anyone other than me?
Not everything was bad or hard. New friends have again come into my life (thinking specifically of four people), which is always a good thing. Two friends moved away, which is sad, but hopefully they won't pass out of my life completely. I did get into grad school, and I really did graduate from UMass, even if the clusterfuck at the end stole all of the joy out of it for me. TBC was a complete success by every possible measurement.
On a personal level, things are going well. My Princess and I passed the year-and-a-day mark for our first Contract, so we reevaluated it, made some changes, and signed a new one for seven years. What can I say, we're traditional like that. The four of us continue to grow closer, and we function very well together as a unit.
And we got a puppy. :-)
Resolutions for 2010:
